Ninja freelance writer Ninja Masuda has returned, I daresay. Today’s issue is about ninjas that appear in video games, specifically games for the PC and home consoles. Let’s take a trip down memory lane, as I dive into Wizardry and Final Fantasy, which are both my favorite games, while also taking a look at how realistic each game depicts ninjas. Oh, and I also have a newly opened ninja theme park to recommend as well!
My first ever encounter with ninjas in an RPG was in Wizardry. Wizardry, released in 1981 for the Apple II in America, is a classic among classics within RPGs. After it’s initial release, the game has spawned countless sequels that has been ported to countless platforms even in Japan. It was so highly influential that it had a significant impact on RPGs such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
In Wizardry, the Ninja is one of the playable classes in the game. The conditions to become a Ninja is also one of the strictest. Treated as an elite class, all your ability points must be near max level, and you are required to align to the evil attribute to play as a Ninja.
In terms of ability, the ninja can dismantle traps and can also activate a critical hit skill that occasionally kills the enemy in one hit. They have low HP but as you level up, your defense will increase if you don’t equip anything on you. That’s what defines a Ninja in Wizardry.
I think Wizardry’s take on the ninja is quite believable when compared to real life ninjas. Dismantling traps and assassination are crucial roles for the ninja and at times a ninja must also perform ruthless tasks. These essential skills were carried over to the game really well, while the cutthroat nature of a ninja would explain the evil attribute. As for their low HP, that can be interpreted as ninjas not wearing clunky armor like a warrior or samurai.
Players of Wizardry have long held the notion that “ninjas in Wizardry are naked”, that’s because high level ninjas gain more defense when not equipping anything. My personal take on this is a little different though. Even if ninjas have adept agility, they are going to catch a cold running around in a dungeon bare-naked, not to mention the lost of all civil communication. So, my own interpretation to this is that they are only wearing their ninja outfit instead of being naked. With that said, since visuals of the players’ character aren’t displayed, players are free to let their imagination run wild. The brilliance of Wizardry is the freedom of imagination, so to naked ninjas of Wizardry, BE FREE!
In Wizardry, when your character changes class, the skills and abilities learned will be brought over to the new class. If you class change to a ninja after acquiring all the spells and skills of the wizard and monk classes, techniques like the human bullet, dismantling traps, spell attacks, healing abilities, and being able to deal critical hits as a bonus will be at your disposal, thus making you a super ninja. Speaking of which, ninjutsu itself is quite similar to an attack spell, and ninjas are known to have knowledge in medicine. If you think of it this way, the super ninja that you can create in Wizardry really isn’t that far-fetched from real life ninja. Seems like there isn't a warrior as versatile as the Ninja in this world. Pretty neat huh?
Now, when it comes to ninjas in JRPGs though, there can only be Final Fantasy. The ninja first appeared as a class that you can change to after the Thief class in the first Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy by the way, was released in 1987 for the NES home console. In the game, ninjas are good at escaping from enemies and are also able to use black magic. As ninjas are not combat specialists, having the ability to escape from enemies is an important skill to have in actual battles. However, constantly running away doesn’t translate well into a game since you can’t level up this way.
The ninja class is honestly pretty useless in the first game but in Final Fantasy III, being able to use every weapon and armor, the ninja became one of the strongest projectile damage focused jobs in the series. Incidentally, it was Final Fantasy III that introduced the “jobs system” to the JRPG genre, what was previously known as “class” or “profession” has since became “jobs” for the Final Fantasy series.
Then in Final Fantasy IV, Edge Geraldine, who is a Ninja and the Prince of the Kingdom of Eblan, made his debut as a playable character in the game. When I first encountered him, there was a palpable sense of incompatibility. I mean, he’s a ninja but he’s…. also a prince? What in the world? However, Edge would later grow on me as a character once I started to play him more often, and immediately I was able to empathize. He is quick tempered, always ready to fight and not a very ninja-like character in nature, and yet it’s probably that human-like trait that has me enamored. He was a character that made me feel that it’s okay even if a ninja isn’t ninja-like. Hey, just because I like Edge doesn’t mean I’m edgy alright.
He’s a failure of a ninja in terms of personality but ability-wise, he’s the best there is. He can cast spell attacks with “Ninjutsu”, steal items from the enemy with the aptly named “Steal”, and attack enemies with projectiles using “Throw”. Actual ninja skills were successfully incorporated into the game huh. His “Throw” skill is especially renowned, as it allows him to inflict heavy damage onto enemies at the cost of an offensive item. Ever since then, the “ninja = throw skill” meta has been prevalent throughout the Final Fantasy series. (The ninjas in FFIII can engage in combat by throwing “shurikens” but “Throw” wasn’t a skill at that point in the series.)
Speaking about ninjas in the Final Fantasy series, there is one more character I couldn’t leave out, and that’s Shadow from Final Fantasy VI. Shadow appeared in the game as an “Assassin” instead of a “Ninja”, that is in fact his job title in the game. However, his outfit is all black, fitting the image of a ninja, he has the “Throw” skill, and he can also use ninjutsu, so I would consider him an off-brand ninja. Shadow has a cold personality, and it is said that he would even kill his best friend for the right price. So right off the bat, he’s definitely more ninja-like than Edge.
Shadow has little care for others except for his only loyal friend, a pet dog named Interceptor. Interceptor always follows Shadow around and supports him in battle. If you try to interact with Interceptor in a certain town, Shadow will warn you instead, saying “Hold it. This dog bites…”. As I had owned a dog back then, I vaguely recall that I had wanted to say that out loud whenever my friends tried to befriend my dog. Though right now I would like to have an actual partner instead……
Lastly, there’s a new ninja theme park that I would like to introduce as well. The other day, I was invited to try out a virtual reality ninja experience at “VR Ninja Dojo” in Kanda, Tokyo. So, what is the VR experience exactly? Well rather than explaining, check out the video below and you’ll get it immediately.
Last time, the “NINJA SAMURAI DOJO” was the main highlight for a real life ninja experience but diving into the virtual world is also a very exciting way to become a ninja.
Oh, and by the way, the “VR Ninja Dojo” theme park is conducting all of their operations in English! Seems like it has been built with foreigners visiting Japan in mind. For Japanese visitors, if you bring along a foreign friend you get to try out the VR experience for free yourself! A Japanese-only option is also available, but it seems like it will be under a full rental package. For more details, feel free to drop the VR Ninja Dojo guys a message!
