Ninja Writer presents: The allure and trivia of the Ninja!
It is me, the ninja maniac freelance writer Ninja Masuda. I had successfully infiltrated a ninja dojo in Asakusa, where you’ll get to experience the thrill of becoming a true ninja! So today, I will be reporting on this interesting discovery. Shuriken throwing is a fairly common practice for me but using all the authentic tools of the ninja is a first. Let’s see how this goes….
This time around, I visited 「NINJA SAMURAI DOJO」, a ninja experience facility about 1 minute walking distance away from the famous Asakusa Kaminarimon. Just like its namesake, the samurai experience is also available in addition to the becoming a ninja. I’ve taken the liberty of providing a list of the courses that are available below.
●Courses & Pricing
1. Shuriken 15 pcs……¥1000
2. Blowpipe 15 shots……¥1000
3. Shinobi Bow 10 arrows……¥1000
4. Ninja Experience (Ninja outfit included, 1 hour course) ……¥6000
5. Samurai Experience (Samurai outfit included, 1 hour course) …… ¥6000
6.Ninja & Samurai Experience (both outfits included, 2 hour course) ……¥10000
※All prices are tax inclusive.
So I requested for the 4th item listed in the menu above, the「Ninja Experience」. It is a full ninja course where you learn battle techniques and then have some fun with shurikens and blowpipes. The master who will be teaching me is Ninja Sensei Budou Shintaro. Budou-san is from the Musashi clan of Ninjas, he is a legitimate professional Ninja who makes a living being an actual “Ninja”. Would’ve been nice if that is also possible for a certain pretend-ninja writer.
Before we put this into practice, we start off by reciting “Kuji”, the nine syllabus mantras and hand seals to ready our minds. It’s that thing where you see ninja’s do in manga and movies. While reciting the nine syllables, 「臨(Rin)、兵(Pyou)、闘(Tou)、者(Sha)、皆(Kai)、陳(Jin)、裂(Retsu)、在(Zai)、前(Zen)」 in order, one has to also perform their designated hand seals accordingly. However, it is difficult for beginners to memorize all 9 syllabuses and hand seals out of the blue so a simpler version of the “Kuji-in” is presented. All you need to do is to position your hands vertically and horizontally then recite the “Kuji” mantra. This way, even children will get to participate. Heck, even I won’t be able to memorize all of it in that instant so honestly, I was relieved. Of course, Budou-san can form the real “Kuji-in” hand seals perfectly and I got to see it with my own eyes!
Next up, I learned about the functions of the 「Shinobigatana」. Unlike the Samurai Katana, the Shinobigatana is a short straight-edged blade about 55cm in length, and its unique point is its big tsuba, the sword guard. The shinobigatana can be laid by a wall, with the tsuba acting as a stepping platform to climb over fences, and then we have the kojiri, which is the end point of the sword sheath. It can be removed and changed into a snorkel for underwater operations. The shinobigatana can be used in many different ways as it was all demonstrated and taught to me by Budou-san. “While the samurai treats a sword solely as a weapon, the ninja treats a sword like a tool.” A profound statement. I will definitely be using that special little trivia in drinking parties.
After that, Budou-san demonstrated a technique called 「Zasaguri no Jutsu」, where the sword is used to combat an enemy that is hidden in darkness. Firstly, the sword is partially unsheathed, leaving it hanging on the edge of the blade, then proceed to grab hold of the “sageo”, a string that is tied to the sheath with your off-hand. Once that is done, start searching for the enemy. The moment the sheath hits the enemy, draw out the sword and stab! Of course, I had to try it out myself and surprisingly it wasn’t particularly difficult to pull off. In fact, it felt like an incredibly practical combat technique, especially for ninjas who had plenty of combat encounters in the dark.
After learning about the Shinobigatana, it is finally time to throw some shuriken! Incidentally, saying “to throw shuriken” is actually incorrect as it is more accurate to “strike with shuriken” but for simplicity’s sake, I’ll be using “throw” in these articles.
The cross shurikens used in this dojo are all made of steel, so the bladed tips are super sharp, exactly like the real deal! In manga and other media, you see ninjas stacking shurikens horizontally on the palm of their hand and then with immense speed, throwing out continuous volleys with the other. However in reality, power and momentum doesn’t flow into any of it so the shuriken won’t actually fly. The correct way is to hold the shuriken vertically, then throw it straight down from the top to bottom in one swinging motion. In that moment, you can also perform a quick snap of your wrist, the added momentum on top of the shuriken’s sharp spins makes it easier to pierce your target.
Once Budou-san’s lesson is concluded, I finally get to throw the cross shurikens, and surprisingly they’ve all struck their targets beautifully if I do say so myself. Well, none of them landed dead center, but I was praised for having good muscle strength, so there’s that. When the cross shuriken struck the wooden targets, it makes a 「kakon!」 sound that gives off an incredibly satisfying feeling. I think this could be a really good stress relief routine.
In volume 2, I’ll report on my experience using the Bo Shuriken (throwing darts) and the blowpipe. Stay tuned!
